| | | | The conversion of his parents' agricultural farm into horse training stables took place step by step:
It started in 1975 with three horse stalls. A stable wing with ten stalls was added in 1981, in 1984/85 the indoor riding arena was built, and in 1993 the free-run exerciser, which was roofed over in 1996. The former cattle sheds, the barn and the old hallway were rebuilt and converted into horse stables. The facilities are completed by an outdoor dressage arena with a size of 20 x 60 metres, a 30 x 70 metres jumping ground, a lungeing circle with a diameter of 18 metres, a second indoor arena (18 x 50 metres), which serves as a riding, lungeing and straw storage hall, and a 1,000 metres canter training track. Today about 45 horses are stabled here.
The stalls are very horse-oriented regarding light, air supply and space. Great importance is attached to excellent quality of forage and litter, as well as to exercising the horses twice a day: In the morning, they receive a varied training on one of the indoor or outdoor arenas or go out on a hack. In the afternoon, the horses are trained in the free-run exerciser, or are turned out on the paddocks or pastures. Beside the horse training business, Josef Freese also rears promising self-bred or bought foals on a small, but fine scale. During their first years of life, the youngsters enjoy living outdoors on lush spacious pastures – in summer, they are kept in a large area called “Wesermarsch”, and in winter – for reasons of additional feeding – they run on ten hectares of land which belong to the property close to the farm. Being a former Oldenburg approval vice-commissioner, Josef Freese knows what really matters in breeding and rearing. |
